The director, Hayao Miyazaki, received Berlin's film festival prize, the "Ours d'Or",
as well as the Japanese 'best film' prize, for Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi.
He is also well-known for his previous highly-praised works, amongst which: the beautiful Laputa (telling the story
of a young girl and her crystal) and entertaining Porco Rosso (about a pilot
during World War II).
