Director Rob Reiner is also known for directing the hilarious This is Spinal Tap (1984),
a spoof documentary about a metal band. |
| |
The beautiful film soundtrack was composed and played by Mark Knopfler,
singer and guitarist of the famous band Dire Straits. |
| |
The film is based on a William Goldman's novel,
but the spirit of the film is very different from that of the book. The latter is an extremely dark and bitter cynical
satire, told by a very intrusive narrator, far from the fairytale hilarious witty but good-hearted film. |

The fire swamps look exactly like Yoda's
"lovely" home planet of Dagobah in The Empire Strikes Back (1980). It
really looks like they used the same scenery set. I could not verify this from any official source,
and found only one other person mentioning this striking resemblance:
"Dagobah, I hear you say? Hah! I know I'm not the only one to have looked at the planet
and shouted 'It's the Fire Swamp! It's the Fire Swamp!'."

There are a few famous actors hidden in the film underneath a lot of make up.
Try to spot them all: Peter Cook, an unforgettable devil in the excellent comedy Beddazled (1967), Billy Crystal, famous comedian who
often hosts the Oscar ceremony, Mel Smith, who was Sir Toby Belch in the good film version of the Shakesperan comedy, Twelfth Night (1996),
Carol Kane, the "Ghost of Christmas Present" in
Richard Donner's brilliant and wicked Scrooged (1988), and Christopher Guest, who was Nigel in
aforementioned This is Spinal Tap (1984). |

As to the famous non-hidden actors, they are numerous too. The beautiful
princess, Robin Wright, also starred in the strange exceptional comedy Toys (1992)
and as Jenny in Forrest Gump (1994). Handsome
Westley, Cary Elwes,
later acted as the very unpleasant Captain Boone in Disney's Jungle book (1994). The grand-father,
Peter Falk, of course better
known for his performance as Columbo, also made a guest appearance in the wonderful
Der Himmel Uber Berlin (Wings of Desire).
The child, Fred Savage, is famous for his part in the Wonder Years, a popular US TV show.
Chris Sarandon acted in horror spoof vampire film Fright Night (1985) and is the voice of Jack Skellington in
Squaresoft's great videogame Kingdom Hearts.
