Radagast (the Brown): wizard, well-learnt in herbs and beasts, friend of birds, helped Gandalf escape by sending him a Great Eagle which carried him away. Though they may not really be of the same family, Gandalf refers to him in The Hobbit as
"my good cousin Radagast, who lives near the Southern borders of Mirkwood"
 
Sam(wise) Gamgee: son of Gaffer, Frodo's gardener, member of the Fellowship, he quickly becomes Frodo's closest friend
 
Saruman (the White): great wizard, his real name is Curunír, 'the Man of Skill'.
 
Sauron: also known as the Enemy, the Shadow, the Necromancer, the Dark Lord, the Nameless, the Great Eye; race undertermined, was a servant of Morgoth in the First Age. He tricked the Elves in the Second Age into forging 19 Great Rings of Power and secretly forged himself a Master Ring, the One Ring to control all others (Year 1600, Second Age). Defeated several times, but never destroyed.
 
Sméagol: Gollum's real name
 
Strider: nickname given to Aragorn by the Bree inhabitants, who know him only as a Ranger
 
Tom Bombadil: also known as Iarwain Ben-adar (to Elves), Forn (to Dwarves), Orald (to Men), strange ancient being, master of the Old Forest, husband of the River-daughter Goldberry.
 
Underhill (Mr): false name used by Frodo outside of the Shire to protect himself from spies and ennemies
