Cirith Ungol: path across the Mountains of Shadow that leads past Minas Morgul into Mordor
 
Dead Marshes: dangerous haunted land that separates the Emyn Muil from Mordor
 
Derdingle: a meeting-place for Ents in Fangorn forest
 
Emyn Muil: hills on the border of the kingdoms of Mordor and Rohan, from which spring the Falls of Rauros; this is where the Fellowship broke and Boromir fell
 
Entwash: river issuing from the Anduin when it splits after the Falls of Rauros, one way going through Rohan (the Entwash) and the main stream through Gondor to the Sea.
 
Fangorn: old forest near Isengard, named after the chief of the Ents (see Treebeard)
 
Helm's Deep: where the Rohirrim fought a desperate battle against Saruman's army

Minas Morgul: the Valley of the Wraiths; once Minas Tirith's proud's sister town, now filled with terror, for it was seized by the Nazgûls after Sauron's defeat (2nd Age)
 
Morgulduin: polluted stream that runs through Minas Morgul
 
Mount Mindolluin: mountain into which side is built Minas Tirith
 
Nan Curunír: 'Wizard's Vale', Saruman's land
 
Orthanc: ancient fortress taken by Saruman as his dwelling, its name has a double meaning: 'Mount Fang' in Elvish and 'Cunning Mind' in Rohan's language; it stands on the Ring of Isengard (circle of huge rocks)
  "A peak and isle of rock it was, black and gleaming hard: four mighty piers welded into one, but near the summit they opened into gaping horns, their pinnacles sharp as the point of spears, keen-edged as knives. Between them was a narrow space, and there upon the floor of polished stone, written with strange signs, a man might stand five hundred feet above the plain."
 
Osgiliath: great city of Gondor which was destroyed during a civil war (the Kin-strife)
